What If You Could See Clearer?
I’ve been meaning to get the windows in my apartment professionally cleaned for years. I had to make one simple phone call and schedule the person to come clean them. I finally did that a few weeks ago. I still cannot believe the difference. It’s remarkable how clearer the world outside is to me. Of course, this made me think of therapy and the journey someone embarks on when they consider beginning therapy. Like getting my windows clean it might take someone years of holding onto my information before they reach out and want to begin our work together. I understand how intimidating therapy can seem. Especially if you’ve never been in therapy before. What do you know? What don’t you know? What can you expect? There’s no clear answer to this last question. That’s because therapy is different for every individual. There’s no right or wrong way to be in therapy.
Therapy is scary. It’s about being vulnerable. I understand it’s hard to trust someone that you don’t know. Discussing things that you might not have ever told someone before. Deciding what you want your life to look like. What if looking outside and seeing the world clearer doesn’t sound appealing to you. I understand that perspective. If we’re being honest, therapy can sometimes make things harder before they’re easier. Ultimately, I think you’ll be happy you started but I can’t promise how long it will take you to get to that point. At some point, I got so used to my windows giving me the hazy view that I forgot how much clearer things could look. Being in therapy doesn’t have to mean you change your entire life but rather you make sure you’re seeing things as they are and making thoughtful decisions about what you want.
